Trachyrincus scabrus (Rafinesque, 1810)Mediterranean longsnout grenadier
The species Trachyrincus scabrus of the Macrouridae family has been recorded in the Atlantic, from Africa, north to the Irish continental shelf and also in the Mediterranean. They are benthopelagic and found at depths of 400 to 1,500 m (Whitehead et al., 1986a). Trachyrincus scabrus has a long pointed snout which is about 40% of the head length, hence the common name of Mediterranean longsnout grenadier. The mouth is inferior and the eye large. Colour is a grey brown and length ranges to over 50 cm (Whitehead et al., 1986a). Trachyrincus scabrus were recorded from the Perseverance Mounds in the northern Porcupine Seabight during the Caracole cruise of August 2001.
