ParalepididaeBarracudinas
The family Paralepididae are an oceanic fish found from mid water to the surface, with the younger fish preferring shallower depths. They are found in all oceans of the world but are not common (Whitehead et al., 1989). The family is composed of small to medium sized fishes ranging in lengths up to 50 cm. The body is long and slender. The snout is pointed, the mouth terminal and the lower jaw projects beyond the upper. Colour in adults is usually silvery to black, and the lateral line is conspicuous (Whitehead et al., 1989). The family Paralepididae were recorded from the Theresa and Perseverance Mounds in the Porcupine area, and in the Rockall area during the Caracole cruise of August 2001. There is more information available for this family on FishBase.
