Nezumia aequalis (Gunther, 1878) 
Smooth grenadier

 

The species Nezumia aequalis of the family Macrouridae has been recorded in the Atlantic from the Azores, Madeira and off Morocco, north to Iceland.  They are benthopelagic at depths ranging from 200 to 2,300 m (Whitehead et al., 1986a).

Nezumia aequalis has an acute snout, an inferior mouth and a small chin barble.  Colour is a blue violet with the outside of the gill covers black.  Lengths range to over 27 cm.  This species shows considerable morphological variation throughout its geographical range (Whitehead et al., 1986a).

Nezumia aequalis were recorded from the Theresa and Propeller Mounds in the Porcupine areas and in the Rockall areas during the Caracole cruise of August 2001.

Nezumia aequalis appears to be of some commercial importance.
