Conger eel

 

Conger eels are a benthic fish found between 0 and 100 m on rocky or sandy bottoms.  Within the study area they are distributed from Africa, north to Iceland and Norway (Whitehead et al., 1986a). 

Congers have an elongate, scaleless body with the dorsal outline of the head being convex.  Each jaw has an outer row of large incisiform teeth.  Colour is generally a dark grey and length ranges up to 3 m (Whitehead et al., 1986a).

Conger conger were recorded from the Conemara field during the Caracole cruise of August 2001.

The conger is of some commercial importance and is also a popular game fish.
