Hoplostethus mediterraneus are generally found between 150 and 500 m.  In the study area they are distributed from Morocco and Maderira north to off the north west coast of Ireland.  Little is known about the reproduction of the species (Whitehead et al., 1986a).

Hoplostethus mediterraneus have a deep, laterally compressed body.  They are usually about 20 cm in length.  Both the head and eyes are large, and there are a number of spines on the cheek bones.  Overall, a reddy pink colour, the head is brighter red, above the lateral line is pink, with darker silvery flanks (Whitehead et al., 1986a).

During the present survey Hoplostethus mediterraneus were observed hiding in the coral of the Galicia Bank.  They appeared disturbed by the presence of the camera.

They do not appear to be of commercial importance.

There is more information available for this species on FishBase.
