Epigonus telescopus (Risso, 1810)The species Epigonus telescopus of the family Apogonidae has been recorded in the Atlantic from the Canaries north to Iceland. They are bathybenthic at depths ranging from 75 to 1,200 m, although most abundant at depth between 300 and 800 m (Whitehead et al., 1986a). Epigonus telescopus have a fairly thickset body and deep head, with a blunt snout and large eye. Colour is a brown-violet to black and is iridesecent when alive. Length is generally about 60 cm (Whitehead et al., 1986a). Epigonus telescopus was recorded from the Propeller Mounds in the northern Porcupine Seabight and the Rockall areas during the Caracole cruise of August 2001.
