Management of coastal ecosystems requires structured knowledge of the habitats and plant and animal communities i.e. BIOTOPES present on the sea bed.

In addition this information aids the:

• Assessment of sites of conservation importance
• Determination of areas sensitive to disturbance and pollution
• Preparation of environmental impact assessments
• Monitoring of environmental change

BioMar is 50% funded by the Commission of European Communities under the LIFE programme.

The project runs from September 1992 to December 1996.
